Labor is the process by which the fetus and the placenta leave the uterus. Delivery can occur in two ways, vaginally (through the birth canal) or by a cesarean (surgical) delivery. During labor the uterus contracts, the cervix thins (effacement) and opens (dilation) and the fetus moves into the pelvis, through it and out through the vagina. Afterwards, the placenta is also expelled.
